When Children Should First Go to the Dentist

Dr. Shahdad, along with the professionals at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, suggests that your child have their first dental appointment by the time they turn one or when their first tooth erupts. This is an ideal time to bring them in for their initial visit simply because infants maintain a level of curiosity. They wonder about the sights and sounds instead of being scared or nervous.

These initial visits make it possible for your children’s dentist to get to know you and your little one, and vice versa. While not always the case, choosing to bring your child in at an early age can be beneficial as they grow, reducing dental anxiety and encouraging a sense of excitement when it comes to oral hygiene.

At-Home Oral Hygiene Tips for Children

If you’re looking to help your little one maintain a healthier smile at home, there are some valuable and beneficial tips to consider, which Dr. Shahdad and her team will be happy to provide during your visit. Some things to remember are:

  • If you have an infant at home who has yet to see their first tooth erupt, use a clean, damp cloth to clean their gums 2-3 times a day. This will remove any residue left behind from breastmilk or formula.
  • When your child’s first tooth erupts, use a toothbrush with a small head and a smear of toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice) to brush their tooth or teeth. Once they are 3 years old, you can begin to use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
  • Once your child is old enough to understand, let them choose their own toothbrush.
  • Make brushing and flossing a family affair. After all, your child will want to emulate you, so set a good example and show them exactly how it’s done!
